Hi Readers,

Today, we’re talking about something that most likely everyone has in their wardrobes - BELTS!

Belts are something that may feel like it should seem intuitive but having spent time with a lot of clients in their wardrobes, it’s an accessory that many of us may actually be a bit unsure how to wear or style.

I’ve had a few recent experiences that made me want to write about this topic:

  1. Observations from styling sessions. I have some clients who easily style belts but aside from that, clients have fallen into three buckets:

  • they don’t own one (I usually have them grab their husband’s belt if its available just so we can style with it!)

  • they have one from like ten years ago that they never reach for and want to upgrade it but have no idea what style/size/color/finish to choose (so many options!)

  • they bought a beautiful expensive one because they got influenced (but don’t know how to actually style it)

  1. Then one of our our readers, Nicole, popped this question in our chat recently:

I’ll share more my thoughts on this below, along with some visual examples

  1. Then - I wore this outfit a few weeks ago. I loved it but something felt off all day.

I realized only upon coming home why it felt so off. More to come on that below and how I solved for it!

Here’s the thing - I know belts aren’t that deep! I’m sure whatever belt you have, or are wearing, looks just fine so no need to overthink it! But I know a lot of readers read this newsletter because they like learning the how and why behind our wardrobe and styling choices, so let’s get into it!

As always, style is the sum of all the parts so if something feels off, just play around with it until it feels right for you. It’s an art, not a science!

Why do I love belts?

It’s one of the best low effort-high impact accessories we have in what I call our ‘styling toolkit’. It’s kind of one of those accessories that once you see it on yourself, you can’t unsee it (in a good way).

They can provide structure, create new shapes, or offer visual interest in under 30 seconds.

evolution of styling an oversized fit and how the little intention of adding a belt can make a big visual impact when it comes to creating shape and definition (bonus points if you push up your sleeves!)

All the ways I love to wear belts!

What We’ll Cover:

  • belt widths - how to choose based on your height, shape, or torso length

  • belt finishes/buckles - how these can switch up your vibe

  • Styling ideas for your belts - For winter! With dresses! To add contrast/shape/interest!

  • Some links along the way to get you started should you be looking for a new belt

  • visual examples - I styled different belts to show how they look on me depending on the type of jeans or pants I’m wearing

Ignore my face and just know that I tried on three rises of jeans and trousers with different belt widths to find that not all are created equally!

Favorite new outfit unlocked from my own styling session!

p.s. - If you want to check out some other past deep dives -

  • Introducing the idea of tension and friction in your outfits

  • Unexpected neutral colors that work with the color and patterns in your wardrobe

Before we jump in - let me introduce you to my favorite joke as a kid…

(hint: It all makes sense now that I’m a stylist why this was my favorite joke!)

“Nice Belt!”

BELT WIDTHS

One of the most common questions I receive from clients is what size belt to get.

I get it - there’s so many options!

Here’s a breakdown of the different width options and what I generally recommend.
