Hi Readers,

Working with clients during my 1 hour styling sessions and Office Hours always helps shed some light for me on how we tend to approach our wardrobes and style habits.

How often are we moving through the days or years reaching for the same pieces, telling ourselves the same limiting stories, or following the same patterns without thinking about if they are still serving the person we are becoming, or wish to become?

Our behaviors aren’t always dictated by what we really want so much as they are by what’s the easiest path forward, or the most convenient for us.

One of the reasons I’m such an advocate for playing in our closets is that unlocking this type of creativity can not only release positive dopamine similar to shopping, but it can also also nurture self-confidence and motivation. And with a little bit of commitment, this can help create new style pathways within your brain and start to release what no longer serves you.

Like all things we want to improve, results come from repetition and consistency.

The reason why your style may not be improving or evolving in the way that you want is because your first instinct may be to shop. You don’t have the chance to build consistency when you are constantly adding new pieces into your wardrobe. It’s like adding noise to an already distracting situation.

It’s also not an overnight transformation - the people whose style you admire most likely took years and years of trials, failures, evolutions, and practice to get to a style that feels authentic and aligned.

In other words, they put in the reps.

The “effortless” style you crave isn’t a result of just being born with this mythical gift of style. It’s the result of putting in enough reps to where the intentional details required to turn an outfit from basic to “stylish” become almost second nature. (ps - and it does actually require a bit of effort!)

If you are feeling in a bit of rut, don’t worry! It’s just about shifting out of auto-pilot and making more intentional, conscious decisions that can create the outcome we desire.

“You do not rise to the level of your goals. You fail to the level of your systems.”
